The final round of the 2023 SSB League was marked by a solar flare. It caused the aurora on Friday afternoon. Changes in the Earth’s magnetic field then result in some anomalies in shortwave propagation conditions.

It also indirectly allows for a comparison of actual propagation between two stations. Example: If both stations transmit WSPR at the same power level during an identical time period, it is possible to compare the received reports to determine which antenna and location (QTH) is better for transmission.
December SSB League
This time, I used 100W from a Yaesu FT-1000MP transceiver fed into an inverted V antenna on an RDM-12 mast. The small power amplifier was not turned on this time. This was apparently noticeable, as the usual initial pile-up of stations did not occur. I ended up working quite a few stations by searching for them. I was pleased to make a contact with Stan OM8HG, whom I hadn’t heard in a long time. Signal strengths varied quite a bit; while some stations came in very strong, others were barely audible. After one hour of operating, my log shows 88 contacts across 63 districts, which is much more than the start of the SSB League had indicated. Here’s how your signals sounded this month:
