How could we not take advantage of these excellent conditions? Fall is just around the corner, and the next round of the VKV Operational Activity brought cool weather to Vlčí vrch, JN88xx, as well. However, there was no rain, with temperatures ranging from 9 to 11°C and an autumn breeze.

A Troubled Start to the VHF PA

The series of technical problems continues. After setting up the equipment, it seemed that the band was quieter than usual. Unfortunately, the R2CW transceiver does not have a tuning option in the beacon segment, so verifying reception is problematic. The first contact with SN9W was successful, but there seemed to be no signals on the band. I kept searching and gradually replaced the coaxial interconnect cables. Of course, this kind of tinkering doesn’t add to the number of contacts or the enjoyment. I managed to identify that the reception attenuation was occurring in the power amplifier.

Replacing the R2CW with a TR-751E

I replaced the transceiver with a TR-751E, and the band suddenly came to life. However, in the first hour, I only managed 12 contacts. But the lost time in the contest can’t be made up. I don’t know why, but that’s just how it is. Propagation conditions seemed above average; I heard quite a few stations, and connections that are usually more challenging—like the one with YO5LD—went through immediately. Right after Daniel (YO5LD), YU7ACO also called. Thanks!

The second hour went better. My log also includes a contact to Germany (JN59) and to KN08. I usually have trouble making contacts in eastern Slovakia, but thanks to the assistance of OM3CQF, who made the contact possible for others as well, I managed to log OM8DD. I also heard OM0AB several times, but he didn’t respond to my calls.

In total, I made 54 connections and 17 multipliers. I was pleased with several nice connections to the Czech Republic. However, I didn’t hear a single station from Slovenia.
