Also in May, I headed to JN8xx above the village of Horná Súča, part Vlčí vrch. However, this time several changes were made to the VHF operating asset.

Improvements to the May VHF PA

After problems with the penetration of RF energy, I changed the power supply. The short 5m coaxial cable was replaced by a 10m long cable with choke at the radiator. It came to the station several snap ferrites.

I also changed mast for another, which got the antenna a little higher. The position of the mast was also faster, which came in handy due to the light rain and not very warm weather.

The third change was the decision to try ON4KST chat. There is no WIFI connection available in the given locality and I was a little worried about the quality of the mobile connection, but it worked properly. In two hours at the cottage I consumed approx. 140 MB data.

VHF operating assets I could therefore go to power 25W. Even before the race, I made a test connection to the JO70 and in a few minutes it became the first connection in the log. With the given power and altitude, I tried to go to the challenge and actually called a string of stations. Sometimes it was harder to log, because a strong wind was blowing and he was trying to turn the mast. Therefore, it was necessary to hold it and broadcast it at the same time (with handheld microphone) and there was no hand left on the keyboard.

At 9 ° C and wind it is not quite pleasant to sit outside, but it can be endured. The hands could be warmer, but what already treba broadcast needs!

While in OK and OM the activity seemed to be higher, this time they seemed to me weaker participation in HA and OE. You didn't even hear much about the station from 9A, S5 or YU. That's why ON4KST chat started. It is really an advantage if someone turns the antenna on you how to invoke it at 25W and 9,5 decibel antenna gain. The secondary effect is also the one, that if the QSO succeeds and is registered by other stations in the area, thus they also show interest in the connection. This is how they succeeded, for example two connections to YO stations.

In the afternoon, the clouds began to part and the wind eased. 9A stations were mainly looking for connections to OM, but also managed to connect with SP9KDA to JO90, which is a multiplier. It remained in the map of the locator squares empty space in JN87:

Some stations could not be called, even though they were heard. This is still due to the power deficit. After all 100W and 25W is 4x power, What is 6 dB, and in OK, some stations have even higher powers, so the connection will fail at a greater distance.

Damage, that the connection failed into eastern Slovak squares. For example, from KN08 several stations were active and in the 2nd subregion the connections were also successful.. This is not an easy direction from JN88xx, because there are hills in the middle of the route (Great Fatra, Low Tatras), but it should be possible. Maybe next time!
